Quick answers.
- Is MyScholarShop faster than submitting a reimbursement request?
- It depends on whether you mean shipping or cash reimbursement. With MyScholarShop, Step Up pays the supplier directly so you have zero out-of-pocket expense, but order review can take up to two weeks before the vendor ships. With reimbursement, you get items immediately from retail stores, but waiting for Step Up to review and deposit funds can take up to 60 days.
- Can I cancel or return an order placed through MyScholarShop?
- Orders can only be cancelled in EMA before they reach Ordered status with the vendor. For returns, families must contact Step Up to initiate a return merchandise authorization. Returned funds are credited back to the student scholarship account, not a personal bank account.
- Do items in MyScholarShop cost more than retail stores like Amazon?
- Catalog pricing in MyScholarShop is set by contracted suppliers and educational distributors. While many items reflect standard retail list prices, the portal does not match third-party flash sales, promo codes, or holiday clearance deals.
- What happens if an item I need is not listed in MyScholarShop?
- If an educational item or curriculum is not carried by MyScholarShop vendors, you can purchase it out-of-pocket from an authorized commercial retailer or publisher and upload the paid invoice into EMA for reimbursement.
With each quarterly scholarship disbursement, Florida Personalized Education Program (PEP) families decide how to acquire their student’s learning materials. Step Up for Students provides two distinct avenues for spending scholarship funds:
- MyScholarShop (Direct Vendor Pay): Purchasing through the internal digital store inside the Education Market Assistant (EMA), where Step Up pays approved vendors directly from your child's scholarship balance.
- Direct Reimbursement: Buying learning materials, books, or services out-of-pocket from commercial retailers and requesting repayment through EMA.
Both pathways draw from the exact same annual student allocation, but they function very differently in practice. Here is an honest breakdown of speed, cash flow, pricing, and administrative overhead.
Speed comparison: shipping time vs. repayment time.
When evaluating which method is faster, families must distinguish between getting the physical item and getting repaid:
| Consideration | MyScholarShop (Direct Pay) | Direct Reimbursement |
|---|---|---|
| Out-of-Pocket Cash | Zero upfront cost (paid directly by Step Up) | Family pays 100% upfront out of pocket |
| Receipt Paperwork | None required | Itemized invoice and proof of payment required |
| Order Review & Processing | Can take up to two weeks before shipment | Reviewers process claims in queues up to 60 days |
| Delivery Speed | Standard shipping from contracted vendors | Immediate at local stores, or fast shipping via commercial retail |
| Vendor Selection | Pre-approved catalog suppliers only | Any legitimate retailer or educational publisher |
If your priority is preserving family cash flow, MyScholarShop is the clear winner because no personal money leaves your bank account.
If your priority is getting materials into your student’s hands immediately, buying out-of-pocket from retail stores or fast-shipping publishers and filing for reimbursement is significantly faster. For a complete walkthrough of invoice requirements, see our Step Up reimbursement guide.
The MyScholarShop workflow: how orders move.
Step Up’s MyScholarShop operates as an integrated purchasing portal. For what items qualify under each category before adding to your cart, review the PEP purchasing guide. When you place an order, it progresses through specific stages in EMA:
- Composing: Items are in your cart but have not been submitted for processing.
- Submitted: The order is submitted and waiting for review by Step Up staff. Step Up’s handbook notes that orders remain subject to review and can take up to two weeks for processing.
- Approved & Ordered: Step Up approves the expenditure and transmits the order to the contracted supplier for fulfillment.
Because Step Up reviews order contents before transmitting them to suppliers, orders placed during peak funding cycles (such as August and November) often experience processing queues before items are packaged and dispatched.
Price differences and retail discounts.
One factor that surprises new homeschool parents is catalog pricing. MyScholarShop products are supplied through established educational contracts. While baseline prices for standard curriculum and textbooks are comparable to list prices, contracted catalogs do not participate in temporary retail promotions, manufacturer instant coupons, or holiday sales events.
If you find a deep discount on curriculum packages, STEM kits, or reference books during holiday promotions, purchasing out-of-pocket and submitting the receipt often yields greater purchasing power for your student's budget. To see how discounts and coupons are handled, review our guide on Step Up holiday sales and discount rules.
Returns and cancellations.
Handling returns reveals another major difference between the two methods:
- Returning a retail purchase: You interact directly with the store or website under standard customer service policies. Once returned, your credit card is refunded immediately. If you already received scholarship reimbursement for that purchase, you are responsible for maintaining accurate scholarship records.
- Returning a MyScholarShop item: Returns cannot be brought to a local retail counter. Parents must contact Step Up to obtain a return merchandise authorization (RMA). Once the supplier receives and confirms the returned item, Step Up credits the funds back to your student’s scholarship balance, not your personal checking account.
Which route should you choose?
Experienced Florida homeschool families often use a hybrid strategy:
- Use MyScholarShop for: Large, standard school supply packages, common publisher textbooks carried in the portal, and major learning kits where you want to avoid tying up personal funds.
- Use Direct Reimbursement for: Specialized curricula from independent or faith-based publishers (such as Abeka or Apologia), time-sensitive science supplies needed this week, local educational field trips, and discounted learning bundles.
Track both MyScholarShop orders and reimbursements in one place.
The Florida PEP Tracker keeps your orders, receipts, and live scholarship balance organized privately on your device.
One payment, no subscription: $49 for one student or $69 for a family. See pricing.
